The Power of Chair Yoga: Unlocking the Benefits of Gentle Movement with AMALAwellness

Is Chair Yoga as good as ‘Regular’ Yoga?
The answer is YES! The only difference is that we do not include kneeling or postures lying/sitting on the floor. Everything else we would see in a general Yoga class can be experienced through Chair Yoga, with great benefits to mind, body and soul.
In AMALAwellness classes, we blend Chair Yoga with gentle strength work and aerobic fitness – making the classes a complete work out.
Chair Yoga and Exercise practitioners experience the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social wellbeing benefits of Yoga. The key difference being that the classes are welcoming of all, regardless of physical limitations. Chair Yoga is ‘regular’ yoga, while accommodating a wide range of individuals. It is a class based around a chair, using it as a prop – like we do our Yoga Mat, or Yoga bricks/blocks and straps.

– Yoga is the stilling of the mind
When we think back to what Yoga is from the Yoga Sutras – Yoga is the stilling of the mind. Anything that we do in life that helps us to achieve this, is Yoga. There is no lesser or greater Yoga. There is just Yoga. This is why Chair Yoga is as good as ‘regular’ Yoga. Infact, it IS regular Yoga. Just in a different modality.
All the benefits of Yoga whilst being accessible to all.

In a Chair Yoga and Exercise class – we still work on asanas (postures), we work on gently toning and lengthening muscles to improve strength and flexibility. We incorporate breath to soothe and calm the nervous system.
The only difference is we use the chair as a prop rather than our Yoga Mat. In a Chair Yoga Class, there are opportunities to work on standing postures, using the chair for support if needed.

We do this using equipment such as exercise bands, exercise balls and standing postures. All elements of the class can be done seated, standing with chair support, or free-standing. This makes AMALAwellness’ Chair Yoga classes accessible to all.
- Better Posture: Many struggle with maintaining good posture in daily life. Through regular practice, we can work on strengthening our core muscles, which play a crucial role in maintaining proper posture and spinal alignment. Thank you for such invaluable information on chair yoga. I am currently recovering from a broken foot so I think this would work nicely for me to stay flexible during this period.
I’ve always thought that some kind of workout was better than no workout. So that’s the first reason I love this post. Second, yoga seems like it lends itself perfectly to a chair-modified version because it’s all about stretch and breath.
I haven’t tried yoga, but I like the idea of using a chair. It can be uncomfortable for some people to get up from the ground. The chair would make a difference.
I have to admit, I have wondered that since I’ve done both classes. Chair yoga is nice to sneak in here and there.
When my mom was younger she took lots of yoga classes and loved them. I think Chair Yoga would be perfect for her mobility level now.
Chair Yoga is a great idea for a quick relaxation break! I loved how you broke down the benefits, of making yoga accessible for everyone!
I need to do some of these stretches when I am at work as I am usually on the computer most of the day.
Hhhmmm….I guess I have to try both out. I’ve never done yoga before but I always look forward to it, some day.
I have been doing chair yoga ever since i wore the walking boot to help with pain from à bone spur at the right heel!
The idea of using a chair seems like a good idea to me. Thank you so much for sharing
Chair Yoga can be equally beneficial as Regular Yoga, offering accessibility and comfort. Both practices enhance flexibility, strength, and relaxation. Thank for the idea.
