Exercise for Seniors in Middlesbrough, Stockton and Redcar & Cleveland
The NHS recommends that seniors should do activities that improve strength, balance and flexibility on at least 2 days a week.
Older adults (50+) should do some form of physical activity daily. This can vary from walking, to house work, to attending a regular exercise class, such as chair based exercise, yoga, Tai Chi, swimming or joining the local gym.

Exercise and fitness classes for older adults helps with mental and physical wellbeing as well as being social and fun!

The NHS states ‘Adults aged 65 and over should:
- aim to be physically active every day. Any activity is better than none. The more you do the better, even if it’s just light activity
- do activities that improve strength, balance and flexibility on at least 2 days a week
- do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity if you are already active, or a combination of both
- reduce time spent sitting or lying down and break up long periods of not moving with some activity
If you’ve fallen or are worried about falling, doing exercises to improve your strength, balance and flexibility will help make you stronger and feel more confident on your feet. Speak to your GP if you have any concerns about exercising.’
This is really important – the more you move, the better you feel.

The benefits of Exercise and Yoga for Seniors
Physical Benefits
Our classes help people stay:
– Healthy – Social – Flexible
– Active – Fit – Balanced
– Strong – Independent
They are also an asset to the local community, slowly developing more and more into a social hub where like-minded people can come together, get moving, learn something new and make new friends.
Just some of the physical benefits include:
- stretching the muscles, to reduce pain and stiffness.
- improves blood circulation to keep the body fresh and active.
- keeps control of blood pressure.
- improves the range of motion of the joints, keeping the symptoms of arthritis in control.
- Helps lift mood – reducing anxiety
- improves balance and coordination.
Mental benefits
Our classes always include a short mindful practice and gentle breathwork at the beginning and end of the class, where we focus on the breath.
This helps to slow down breathing, helping the mind to be more clear and focused. It soothes the nervous system and invokes rest, relaxation and reduces stress and anxiety. Exercises in the class, especially chair based yoga and chair yoga flow also have a focus on the breath, which really helps with improving mental wellbeing too.

Yoga, Gentle Exercise and Meditation lessons have a myriad of benefits for those suffering with anxiety. For example, you can learn how to control your breathing and learn relaxation techniques which can be used in and out of class.

These classes look so fun! I’m not elderly and would still love to attend. Great info!
I attend a lot of classes , I’m not elderly but haven’t seen many options for elderly classes near me , the area would definitely benefit from some
So important for the elderly to exercise. Looks like lots of fun.
Looks like a great set of classes for seniors. Lord knows we all need exercise, all the time.
That is so cool. I am sure they have a great time.
Such a wonderful retreat and glad to see the senior are having a good time! Thanks for the introduction and I will share with people around me. 🙂 – Knycx Journeying
Perfect timing. My mom is already a senior and I walk with her every morning as her exercise routine. I also taught her breathing exercises. I’m glad I found new ways through this post to keep her moving. Thanks for the recommendations!
This is awesome and it definitely help senior to have a good time and be health.
I am not a senior citizen just yet :-p But I am noticing my body change as I age and staying active is no longer optional – it is a must!
This post might be geared towards seniors but these are great exercises to do for those of us who sit in chairs all day for work.
Yoga for seniors is such a good idea. They very much need that exercise to keep them active and feel fresh.
My mom would really love this program. She is try to do chair yoga as it really helps her knees.
Exercise is so important for everybody – including seniors! This is wonderful that you are doing this!
When my grandfather was in the home they always tried to do chair exercise with them. It was great to get them moving, even if they couldn’t walk. My grandfather was off his feet so he always did arm and upper body exercises until he was eventually unable to do them.
Staying active is so important! I’m glad there are programs designed with seniors in mind.
Such a positive piece and glad to know that the seniors are taking up exercise. You surely are never too old to set another goal . Thanks for sharing!
Exercising for seniors is so important. It’s great to keep the muscles strong and limber.
Staying active, especially as you get older is so important!!! This is a fabulous program!
As we age it is more important than ever to keep up
on exercise. This help us to age well in body and mind.
Exercising is so important. Especially when you get older. Make sure not to overdo yourself though!
It’s so important for senior citizens to exercise also. I think they need light but fun exercises. Maybe in the form of yoga or zumba?
I never thought that seniors are having exercises too. Thanks for sharing these exercises. It really helps!
Keeping fit is not just a question of aesthetics, but mainly of health. Except that at every age there are, in my opinion, specific exercises. My grandmother will love this article!
It’s great that these classes are available. they’re great for fitness and socialising too.
This looks like such a great way to keep seniors healthy and active. It also looks like a ton of fun and like it would be great for socializing too.
I love it. Seniors will surely enjoy this activity. It will make them string and healthy.
The benefit is huge! My grandfather is shy of 90s and he never stopped working out, only altering it with professionals to meet his needs and age. Not only he is fully mobile (even though he sure is slow now), he’s also absolutely sane. They say there is a strong connection between physical and mental health with elders – I definitely see it with my grandpa
I’m interested in learning new exercises for seniors since it provides me ideas for other activities I could encourage my mom to participate in. Thank you so much for your fantastic tips!
So wonderful! I like the attention you pay to seniors. So much wisdom and love there, and we need our seniors to be alive and healthy to pass down their stories!
That’s fabulous. It is so important to keep exercising as you get older and to make sure it is age appropriate and takes into account any ailments you have.
This is amazing. Some of my volunteers at work are in their 80’s and they love their Pilates and Yoga classes, one of them goes to a spin class for the Aged and it’s brilliant x
