What is Yoga Nidra?
– Introduction –
Yoga Nidra is an accessible meditation and relaxation technique taught to help positively change habits through affirmations known as sankaplas. Yoga Nidra promotes deep relaxation of body and mind. When we learn to relax deeply, it helps to soothe and calm the nervous system. The deep relaxation that Yoga Nidra offers also allows us to move into the subconscious mind, helping to positively alter habits.
Yoga Nidra is an accessible, inclusive discipline.
Enjoy learning deep relaxation and expanding your consciousness.
The Origin and History of Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra is an ancient Yogic practice that has gained popularity in recent years for its relaxation benefits and power to transform the mind.
Yoga Nidra allows deep relaxation of both the body and mind, allowing practitioners to access a state of complete physical, mental, and emotional relaxation.

– Practising Yoga Nidra –
During a Yoga Nidra session, students lie down in savasana (a restorative relaxation posture) and follow the gentle guidance of a trained teacher. The practice typically consists of a series of verbal instructions that guide you through different stages of restful meditation, leading you into a state of deep relaxationt. Students will experience progressive muscle relaxation techniques, rotation of consciousness techniques and be coached on how to lie in savasana properly, to allow muscles to release stress and tension.
. By entering a state of deep relaxation, students can access the subconscious mind, where deep-seated patterns and behaviors are stored. (Known as samskaras in Yoga).
Through the practice of Yoga Nidra, students can become aware of negative patterns, explore them with a sense of non-judgment. This allows students to make conscious choices to transform them and bring positive changes to life.
Benefits of Yoga Nidra
Yoga Nidra is accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels. You don’t need any prior experience in yoga or meditation to practice it. All that is required is a willingness to relax, rest deeply and let go. No specialist equipment is needed either, just a Yoga mat or a comfortable space to lie down in Savasana.

Yoga Nidra allows students to release tension, anxiety and stress stored in the mind and body. As students enter into a state of deep relaxation, the nervous system enters a resting state (known as the parasympathetic nervous system), allowing the body’s natural restorative and healing mechanisms to switch on. This can lead to improved sleep, reduced anxiety and stress, as well as improving overalphysical and mental well-being.
Some of the benefits students may experience when practising Yoga Nidra are:
1. Deep relaxation and stress reduction: Yoga Nidra helps release tension, anxiety and stress stored in the body and mind. Yoga Nidra does this by inducing a state of deep relaxation through different exercises during the practice. As students enter into a state of relaxation, the body’s natural healing mechanisms are switched on. This helps reduce stress and allows us to relax deeply.
2. Improved mental clarity and focus: When students enter a state of deep rest , it allows the mind and nervous system to settle in the parasympathetic, it allows the mind to settle, reducing anxiety and receptiveness improves. This can lead to the practitioner becoming more creative, experiencing better concentration, and improving productivity in daily life. It can also offer benefits to social wellbeing.
3. Positive transformation and self-discovery: By accessing the deeper layers of consciousness in the mind through rotating different techniques, such as progressive muscle relaxation and breathwork, students can bring awareness to patterns of the mind, explore them without judgment, and make positive decisions to transform them.
Incorporating Yoga Nidra into your routine can:
– improve overall well-being
– help you find balance in life
– allow deep muscle relaxation
