It is a magical running experience, where you get to experience the great outdoors in a unique way, whether running or volunteering.

Volunteering: thinking of joining and supporting MTAR’s community?

All social enterprises need volunteers to support their ventures. Especially the evening runs, that take a lot of planning and preparation. The more people who volunteer, the more support these organisations have to keep offering these events.

Improve your wellbeing, whilst supporting local communities.

Here’s a look at why volunteering for this kind of event offers just as much joy and fulfillment as participating in the run itself. Stepping up to support can improve your wellbeing, as well as offering a hand to the benefit of local community ventures.

1. Community Connection

Volunteering for a community event like More Than a Run’s Night Run isn’t just about directing runners or supporting people signing in; it’s about being part of something bigger than yourself. When you volunteer, you play a key role in helping people enjoy a positive experience, whether they’re seasoned runners or first-timers. Your support, guidance and smile can really change the experience for people. Especially people who are nervous and unsure when joining an event like this.

In a world where we’re often busy with our individual lives, or engrossed in the internet, volunteering brings people together. It fosters a sense of connection and unity. You’ll be surrounded by people of all ages and backgrounds. Bringing people together with the goal of creating a safe, enjoyable, and memorable event.

2. The Fulfillment of Giving Back

There’s a special kind of fulfillment that comes from giving your time for the benefit of others. Knowing that your role as a marshall is essential to the runners’ experience, safety, and morale can be incredibly rewarding. There is a lot of benefit in cheering on participants as they push themselves through the final stretch or offering a word of encouragement to a runner who’s struggling mid-course.

At night runs, marshalls are the guiding lights—quite literally. In the dark, marshalls guide participants and help them navigate paths and terrain whilst cheering them on. Runners often describe the energy they draw from volunteers along the course, and as a marshall, you’ll witness this firsthand. That extra boost from marshalls can change fatigue into that extra bit of energy participants need to get over the finish line.

3. Health and Wellbeing: Moving Beyond Physical Fitness

More Than a Run’s social mission isn’t only about fitness; it’s about mental well-being, self-improvement, and the community that running, walking and being outdoors can build. By volunteering, you’re supporting a cause that helps people improve their lives across not only physical, but mental and emotional wellbeing too. Research shows that combining running , walking and volunteering can have significant mental health benefits.

Helping others has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood, and increase feelings of self-worth.

4. Practical Perks: Gain Skills and Experience

Volunteering for events like this night run provides you with a variety of skills. As a marshall, you’ll be in charge of guiding runners, monitoring safety, and coordinating with other volunteers and event organisers. From communication skills to leadership experience, event marshalling is an excellent way to build skills and knowledge.

5. A Chance to Enjoy the Atmosphere without the Sweat

Not everyone’s a runner, or you might be taking a pause from running due to injury or another challenge. Volunteering allows you to enjoy the benefits of the running community without participating in the run. Night races have a unique charm—glowing lights, reflective gear, and the collective energy that makes the night feel alive.
